ALYH ABOVE is a multidisciplinary artist, researcher and worldbuilder constructing artistic research projects aimed toward studying, expressing, and reflecting on The Human Experience as Creative Process and its role in black fulfillment.

Native to West Palm Beach, FL and currently creating out of Philadelphia, PA, their work is expressed through music, writing, production, design, film, archive, theory, philosophy, and creative liberation strategy. Since 2015, ALYH ABOVE’s practice has used art, creative research, worldbuilding and the study of Life as Art to honor and proliferate black fulfillment.

At current, they are developing their worldbuilding studio, here + human, which equips artists and cultural workers to create the world(s) we need next. Through here + human’s non-linear educational, artistic, and archival offerings, ALYH intends to help seed liberative change. They are also crafting existentia. — the name of both a speculative world and an art-journal made up of black fulfillment ephemera.

WHY FULFILLMENT?
Fulfillment has always been a form of black resistance. We have always decided that we were going to thrive anyway, whether that meant subverting dehumanizing systems to serve us, or creating our own. We have used this form of resistance to create worlds within this world — ones that can support and preserve the fullness of our humanity.

We Been Fly: African American Music as Archive, Resistance, and Pleasure

2024
Musiqology Media Group live presentation responding to Temple Contemporary’s exhibition, Black Like That
ALYH ABOVE, Lead & Supporting Vocalist
Learn More

This presentation traces the development of African American music in the United States through narrative, visuals, and compelling performances. From its origins during the colonial period, African American music became a powerful societal and commercial force in the world. Conceived of and written by award-winning music historian, pianist, Guthrie Ramsey, “We Been Fly” tells this story through narrative, video, and live musical examples from several genres, we’ll learn about the many meanings embedded in African American music and how it continues to shape American life.

Among other stories, this multi-media performance piece considers the lives and musical activities of three remarkable Black Philadelphians from the past: Rev. Richard Allen (1760-1831), Francis Johnson (1792-1844), Charlotte Forten Grimké (1837-1914). We also touch on figures like Gladys Bentley, Bobby Timmons, Will Smith, and Frankie Beverly.
